Ultrafast living cationic polymerization of isobutylene induced byethylaluminum sesquichloride (Et3Al2Cl3)/2-chloro-2,4,4-trimethylpentane(TMPCl)/2,6-dimethylpyridine (DMP) initiating system was realized in microflowsystem. The polymerization can be accelerated at utmost to finish in only 4 swith extremely narrow molecular weight distribution. Regulation factorsinvolving mixing intensity, DMP concentration and solvent polarity weresystematically investigated. Increasing mixing intensity sharply reduced thepolydispersity index (PDI). A two-stage effect of DMP was revealed, corresponding to the interactions between DMP with protonic impurity and DMPwith Lewis acid, respectively. With the increase of polar solvent content, polymerization was accelerated significantly. This polymerization system caneven operate at elevated temperature as high as -55 ℃without the loss of livingness, which is of great beneficial to thecommercialization of polyisobutylene-based functional polymer materials.
